Lateral Violence occurs within marginalized groups where members strike out at each other as a result of being oppressed. The oppressed become the oppressors of themselves and each other. Common behaviours that prevent positive change from occurring include gossiping, bullying, finger-pointing, backstabbing and shunning.
The Crab In The Bucket, transforms lateral violence in your community.
During this workshop facilitator Denise Findlay works with participants to increase awareness and skills in order to respond effectively to Lateral Violence in their community organizations. It is intended that this workshop will be the impetus for much needed change in regard to the unconscious use of power in Aboriginal community organizations. Our Lateral Violence workshops provide a safe space for participants to dialogue about this very sensitive topic. Participants will be empowered to make healthy choices, to create a network of support, and to have a voice that can influence sustainable change at a grass roots level.
Our goal is to give participants the tools and language required to respond appropriately to Lateral Violence on an individual and community level. By the end of the workshop participants will have shared and discussed strategies for creating sustainable change in regard to Lateral Violence and will be able to constructively address the subject of Lateral Violence in their families, communities and organizations.
Crab In The Bucket workshop participants will be able to:
- Explore Lateral Violence and why it occurs;
- Practice communication tools that they can take back to your organization or community;
- Develop a new understanding of change and its impact;
- Identify emotional triggers that contribute to the cycle of Lateral Violence;
- Create a self care plan;
- Strategize ways of creating change at a community level; and
- Build a safe and positive support network.
Transforming Lateral Violence
- Is an inside job
- Is about finding our voice and helping others find theirs too
- Is about listening deeply to each other
- Is about remaining open to those who we perceive as the enemy
- Is about awakening each other
- Will occur when we begin to experience ourselves powerful and deserving
We have all had the experience of feeling undermined. Why do those around us and why do we subtly and not so subtly attempt to sabotage the growth and success of another? More importantly, how do we do it, what is the cost and how do we alter this vicious cycle?
In this groundbreaking workshop on Lateral Violence we will be naming, confronting and creatively transforming our barriers to success on a personal, relational, organizational and community level.
