Notice Your Non-Verbal Communication

Did you know that only 7% of our communication is conveyed using words. Most of what we are saying is being translated through our body language and the tone of our voice! So, regardless of what is being said people are constantly picking up on what our tone and body language is saying to them. That’s why is so important that we develop an awareness in regards to our the way we use our bodies when we are communicating and how the tone of our voice impacts others. Most of us aren’t even aware of these things and wonder why people respond to us the way they do somethings. If you have a tough message to convey or you are in a conflict try the following….

  • Slow down…breathe
  • Maintain an even and soft tone of voice
  • Keep your body language open and non-threatening (avoid crossing arms)
  • Make eye contact
  • Pause in between sentences
  • Sit back and listen when the other part is speaking

Next time you are speaking to someone notice your tone of voice and the way you position your body. What message are you conveying? And….more importantly what message do you want to convey!

Conversely, you can use your tone and body language to make a strong point when needed. At the end of the day ensure your body language matches your message and helps get the end result you are after.

Give it a try. Awareness is everything so even if you are just noticing yourself a bit more then that’s a step in the right direction.
